FRESNO, Calif. - No. 42 Fresno State mens tennis team earns its first Western Athletic Conference title under the reign of head coach Jay Udwadia. Fresno State defeated No. 52 New Mexico State, 4-1. The Dogs started off short after losing the doubles point but with straight set victories on courts one, five, and three Fresno State pulled ahead. In a three set victory on court two, the Dogs cinched the match and brought home the victory.
"It was nice to get a win for the athletic department and all the people who've supported us this year," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "We're looking forward to the NCAA Tournament coming up in two weeks."
The Dogs started off a little rocky in doubles, dropping two of the three matches and putting the Aggies up 1-0.
The Dogs put a stop to the Aggies in singles right after that in singles.
In a quick, straight set victory over New Mexico State's top-seeded player, first team All-WAC singles player Rikus de Villiers defeated Arthur Surreaux, 6-1, 6-1 tying the match 1-1.
The singles victories just kept rolling for the Dogs as freshman Nick Papac earned Fresno State its second point in the day after topping Luis Ramirez, 6-2, 6-3 on court five.
On court three, Jean-Charles Diame puts away a straight set victory over the Aggies Orlando Superlano, 6-2, 6-4 giving the Dogs their third point in the day.
In the final match of the day, Remi Boutillier fell in the first set to Jim Brouleau, 3-6. Boutillier then rallied back and triumphed over Brouleau, 6-3, 6-3 to give the Bulldogs their WAC Championship and automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs will now have to wait until Tuesday for the NCAA Selection Show to find out their seed, who they are playing, if and whom they will be hosting for the Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The 2011 NCAA Division I men's tennis selection announcements will be on www.NCAA.com, Tuesday, May 3. The men's show will air at 2:30 p.m. Once you navigate to NCAA.com, go to the men's tennis page to find the link. The team brackets will be posted on the NCAA websites (www.NCAA.com and www.NCAA.org) 30 minutes after the completion of the selection show, Tuesday, May 3.
