FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golf holds a one-stroke advantage over three-time defending champion New Mexico State after the first day of competition at the 50th annual WAC Championship. The Bulldogs shot even-par to claim the first round lead at the 7,313-yard, par-72 Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
The Dogs were led by senior Bryan Hogan's 4-under, 68, which marks his lowest round of the year. His bogey-free round was complemented by four birdies on the front nine, giving him a 32 at the turn. Hogan sunk back-to-back-to-back birdies on holes four through six. He currently sits in second place, two-strokes behind the leader Damian Telles of Idaho.
"Hogan had no bogeys and that is exceptional on a course like this," head coach Mike Watney said. "To go bogey-free is amazing. He hit the ball really well and was able to stay out of the desert."
Brian Sunker, a junior from Valencia, Calif., will head into the second round in third place after firing a 2-under, 70. Sunker knocked in back-to-back birdies on holes two and three and another on the 516-yard, par-5 17th.
Bhavik Patel and Michael Gideon both carded 3-over, 75's to end the day in a tie for 22nd place. Senior Brad Wyatt sits in 44th place at 12-over.
"I am happy we are in the hunt but I am not at all relaxed," Coach Watney added. "There is great competition out there and we need all five guys to play well."
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday for the second day of competition at the WAC Championship and will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:10 a.m.
