LOS ANGELES - As preparations for the 2011 NCAA Tournament began Friday morning, the Fresno State baseball team received exciting news that two Bulldogs were selected as All-Americans.
Senior Greg Gonzalez and junior Dusty Robinson were named All-Americans by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Gonzalez earned first-team honors and Robinson was named third-team.
Gonzalez, a pitcher from San Bruno, Calif., also was named the WAC Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. The right-hander is 11-0 this season and has the second longest winning streak in college baseball of 13-straight decisions dating back to 2010.
The all-conference selection has seventh best ERA in the nation of 1.43. Gonzalez has allowed 16 earned runs in 100.2 innings of work. He has given up 64 hits and 26 walks. Gonzalez has struck out 121 batters, which is seventh best in the nation.
Robinson, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., was named a Freshman All-American in 2009 and was selected the WAC Player of the Year this season. He also earned first-team All-WAC honors and was named the WAC Tournament MVP.
The outfielder is hitting .318 and has started 51 games without committing an error. Robinson leads the conference with 20 doubles and 16 home runs. He became the first Bulldog to hit 15 or more home runs three seasons in a row. Robinson is 11th in the nation in home runs hit.
The last tie the Bulldogs had two All-Americans in the same year was the 2008 National Championship season. In 2008, Steve Susdorf and Tanner Scheppers earned All-American accolades.
Fresno State faces UC Irvine at the Los Angeles Regional on June 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
