WACO, Texas -
Day one of the Annual HEB Baylor Tournament was an easy sweep for Senior Remi Boutillier, who brought in the first win of the season for the `Dogs against Beau Bernstein of University of Texas-Pan American. Boutillier advanced in play against Maryland's Jesse Kiuru and took an effortless win. Boutillier is set to play tomorrow in the 16-man bracket.
Sophomore Nick Papac played neck and neck with University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Carlin Murray. After three sets, Murray was able to snatch the win. Papac moved to the consolation bracket where he then played against Luis Hernandez of Laredo. In a thrilling third set, Papac took the win with a score of 10-6.
"I played a bunch of individual tournaments this summer so it felt good to get out there and play for the Bulldogs again and get my sophomore season started," Papac said. "I also really enjoyed playing doubles with Remi."
Papac and Boutillier made their debut as a doubles team for the first time today. The 'Dogs took on WAC opponents, Luis Ramirez and Matej Stakne from New Mexico State. The duo seized an easy win with an 8-3 match and moved to the next round to play Oklahoma. Although the `Dogs did not advance in doubles play, Boutillier and Papac will both continue on in the tournament tomorrow in singles.
"Nick and I played a solid first round of doubles, but came up short in our second match," Boutillier said.
The `Dogs resume play tomorrow starting with Boutillier at 10 a.m. against Oklahoma's Dane Webb. Papac is scheduled to play at noon.
