FRESNO, Calif. - Four newcomers debuted as members of the Fresno State men's tennis team Friday at the Wathen Center in the annual Bulldog Classic.
Junior Zach Leslie, a transfer from Wake Forest University, made a big impact in his first tournament as a Bulldog, taking on players from UC Davis and Pacific and ultimately moving on to play in the quarterfinal round in singles play tomorrow against the No. 1 seed.
Leslie also teamed up with fellow newcomer, Sai Kartik Nakireddi in doubles to play to defeat Cal's Chase Melton and Andrew Scholnick. Pacific's Ivan Castro and Alex Golding fought hard, but the Bulldog duo was no match, clutching an 8-5 win.
Leslie and Nakireddi continue playing tomorrow against fellow teammates sophomore Francis Alcantara and senior Jean-Charles Diame.
The veteran team Alcantara and Diame were able to advance to the semifinal round in easy wins over Connor Coates and Toki Sherbakov from UC Davis and Johnny Wang and Eric Johnson from USC.
Diame was seeded No. 3 in the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles play after defeating Cal Poly's Brian McPhee.
Alcantara and Nakireddi join Diame and Leslie in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Play begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center, but will be moved to Sierra Racket and Sports Club at noon.
