FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team is gearing up for a four-game road trip that kicks off with their only competition this week at No. 4 UCLA on Sunday.
About the Bruins
(4-0-1) Head Coach B.J. Snow began his first season at the helm of UCLA's program in 2011. The Bruins are ranked top 10 in four different polls (NSCAA/adidas, Soccer America, SoccerTimes.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com). A returner to watch is Sydney Leroux. The Pac-12 Women's Athlete of the Week (Aug. 29) currenlty leads the Bruins in goals (3), points (6) and shots on goal (11). She is also first in the conference in shots (25).
Bruising the Bruins
The Bruins lead the series 4-0 all-time between the programs. UCLA came out on top in their last meeting (5-0) on Nov. 12, 2008 in Los Angeles at the NCAA Tournament.
Racking Up The WAC Honors
Sophomore Morgan Castain is the second straight Bulldog to be recognized by the Western Athletic Conference. The Castro Valley, Calif. native scored three of the 'Dogs four goals over the weekend to earn WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors (Sept. 5). She scored both of Fresno State's goals against UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 2) and the go-ahead goal over Sacramento State on Sept. 4.
Bulldogs in Extra Minutes
Fresno State has seen only one overtime match this season. The Bulldogs took No. 21 Loyola Marymount through two overtimes before the match was decided a tie. In 2010, the Bulldogs took eight games into extra minutes, including a streak of three consecutive overtime matches. The 'Dogs were 2-2-4 in overtime games last season.
'Dogs Dominating Defense Returns
Three of the five defenders responsible for the Bulldogs league-high nine shutouts return for the 2011 season. Kendall VanDine, Lauren Lindstrom and Kayla Kret bring their championship experience to the new 'Dogs. The defense has earned four shutouts in the 2011 season and rank second in the WAC.
Leaders of the Pack
Fresno State currently leads the WAC in points (41), goals per game (2.17), assists (15) and assists per game (2.50). The Bulldogs also rank second in goals (13) and shutouts (4).
