FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Laura Pola and partner junior Olga Kirpicheva brought life to the Fresno State women's tennis team on Saturday in the second day at the California Winter Invite at the Hellman Tennis Center. The duo bested Cal Poly's Gabrielle Gatewood and Jennifer Cornea, 8-0.
Head coach Simon Thibodeau felt that the twosome's success was the highlight of day.
"I was very happy with Laura and Olga's performance in doubles today," Thibodeau said. "They were flawless."
Junior Bianca Modoc and sophomore Tanya Murtagh also played well in doubles play against the Mustangs, beating Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb, 8-6.
The Bulldogs faced No. 8 California in singles play, but we unable to pull out a win.
"I think today was another good day of preparation for the season," Thibodeau said. "It's always good to play a top 10 team like Cal because strong competition only makes us better."
The team looks to finish the last day of the tournament strong tomorrow when they take on Cal Poly in singles at 10 a.m. and Saint Mary's in doubles at 12:15 p.m.
Complete match scores from Saturday's play will be posted when made available.
