FRESNO, Calif. - Michelle Moses out-dueled North Dakota State's Whitney Johnson and provided the only offense in Fresno State's 1-0 win over the Bison Friday night at Bulldog Diamond.
Moses' first inning homer was the only hit the Bulldogs (2-0) picked up and the only hit they needed to beat the Bison's ace in the second day of the Fresno State Kick-Off Tournament.
After hitting her second home run in as many days, Moses shut the Bison (2-1) offense down, allowing just three hits en route to recording her ninth career shutout.
"I think Michelle pitched a great game," head coach Margie Wright said. "They came out swinging over there and she really did a nice job in the tight spots. She really gutted it out and did a good job."
NDSU's Johnson came into the game, the Bison's third of the tournament, with 29 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched thanks in part to her school record 19 strikeouts in Thursday's opener against Toledo. Fresno State only struck out five times against her, but Moses' solo shot to left in the first proved to be enough.
"I think we all saw the ball pretty well today, we were seeing her, but we were just anxious," Moses said. "Our team's pretty aggressive up to bat and for me I was just trying to be aggressive."
"I kind of knew it was going to be a pitchers dual," Wright added. "I thought we would hit the ball better, but [Johnson] pitched a really good game, too."
Of the three hits Moses gave up, two of them were doubles. The first came with two outs in the second, but the senior right-hander ended that Bison threat with one of her seven strikeouts to end the inning.
The second double came in the top of the seventh with one out. Moses again was unfazed and she struck out NDSU's Jamie Gay before getting Presley Glaser to fly out to center to end the game.
"We Are Your Team" - The Bulldogs return to the field tomorrow for two games against UC Riverside and Sacramento State at 2 and 4:15 p.m. Catch all the action from Guy Haberman on ESPN2 790 AM, the home of Fresno State softball.
