Denver, Colo. - Fresno State men's tennis student-athlete Remi Boutillier, who is the 19th-ranked singles player in the country, was named the Verizon WAC Player of the Week for Feb. 20.
The senior earned his second honor of the season when he went 3-1 in singles and doubles for the week against No. 9 Stanford and San Francisco.
Boutillier led the No. 33 Fresno State men's tennis team to its first victory against No. 9 Stanford last Tuesday, Feb. 14.
It looked as though Stanford would serve the Bulldogs its first lost since the opening weekend early in the match, with wins across the board in doubles. However, the `Dogs rallied in singles to deliver a crushing loss to the Cardinal.
After a back-and-forth in singles play the fate of the match fell to team captain Boutillier, who edged No. 37 Ryan Thacher in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5), in a thrilling battle at the No. 1 spot. The victory clinched the win for the Bulldogs and earned the `Dogs their first-ever victory against the Cardinal.
On Monday, the team traveled to San Francisco for a rematch against the Dons. At No. 1 doubles, Boutillier and Alcantara started off Fresno State's victory when they bested Jonathon Knowlman and William Schumacher, 8-4. In singles, Boutillier came out with the victory when the Dons' Schumacher retired from the match, 6-4, 3-0, at No. 1 singles.
The Bulldogs return home to face UNLV on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
