CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Fresno State pitcher Michelle Moses posted 17 strikeouts and threw a no-hitter to lead the Bulldog softball team past Iowa State 3-0, but the `Dogs dropped their second game Thursday 9-0 in six innings to No. 15 Arizona in the first day of the Cathedral City Classic.
With the split in Thursday's games, Fresno State stands at 8-3 overall on the year and the Arizona game ended a five-game winning streak for the Bulldogs where they won all five games via shutouts.
"I felt we played extremely well this morning," head coach Margie Wright said. "I can't say enough about Michelle's pitching performance and during that game the three home runs were huge being able to show our power. The second game was quite disappointing because we didn't play up to our ability."
Moses' no-hitter was the second of her career and the 68th in program history. Her 17 strikeouts were one off the school record for a seven-inning game. Moses set that school record with 18 strikeouts against Louisiana Tech on May 8, 2010.
"I felt good today and felt strong," Moses said. "The defense was good when we needed them and we had clutch hits so it was a good game. I want to see us come back tomorrow and win both of them, win two games because that is what we are capable of."
Moses now has thrown three-straight shutout victories. After Thursday's outstanding performance she is 4-2 on the year, sports a 0.65 ERA and has 58 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched.
"Michelle was very phenomenal," Wright said. "I think our team needs to understand that we cannot rely on those kind of performances. We have to make a difference offensively and we did not in the second game today."
Fresno State's three runs against Iowa State all came off solo homers in the top of the sixth. Moses started it with her fifth home run of the season and then Michelle Solomon and Vonnie Martin followed with solo shots of their own. For Solomon and Martin, their homers were the first of their careers.
In game two, Arizona picked away at the Bulldogs by scoring one run in the first, two in the third and then six runs over the fourth through sixth innings to beat Fresno State. Wildcat pitcher Kenzie Fowler held the Bulldog offense to just three hits in the game as she improved to 3-0 on the year.
Senior pitcher Mackenzie Oakes (3-1) drew the loss in the second game, as she allowed three runs in 2.2 innings of work.
Sophomore infielder Stesha Brazil led Fresno State at the plate on Thursday. She went 3-for-6 in the two games with two doubles, one apiece vs. Iowa State and Arizona.
The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Friday for a pair of games against Ohio State (10 a.m.) and Iowa (12:30 p.m.).
