FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team had back-to-back 10-hit games as the Bulldogs defeated Purdue 6-1 and Connecticut 8-3 on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond in day two of the Bayer CropScience Classic.
Fresno State (15-8) came into Saturday with just 10 hits in one game all year, but was seeing the ball well as they poured it on in a pair of wins.
"I really think our kids did a great job today with their timely hitting and executing," head coach Margie Wright said. "We were very aggressive today, but we were very patient with the pitches we were being thrown. I was very happy with our performance."
Of Fresno State's 20 hits in the victories, the Bulldogs posted four doubles, one triple and two home runs.
"I think when we got on a roll, everybody was seeing the ball pretty well," Wright said. "I just think we did a really good job today and we needed to get those two wins, especially after last night [a 5-4 loss to No. 15 Oregon]."
Fresno State had three players post four hits in Saturday. Michelle Moses and Stesha Brazil were both 4-for-7 while Brooke Ortiz went 4-for-6.
Brazil was 2-for-3 in game one against Purdue and she hit her first home run as a Bulldog, a three-run shot in the sixth that put the game away.
Moses finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in game two against UConn when she went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, one walk, three runs scored and four driven in. Moses has now driven in four runs two times in four games over the tournament.
Ortiz has been hot at the plate and in her last three games she is 6-for-9. On Saturday, she hit two doubles in game one with one RBI and one run scored and then went 1-for-3 in game two with a run scored.
In the circle, Moses pitched a complete game against the Boilermakers to improve her record to 8-6 on the year. She only gave up three hits and one unearned run.
Mackenzie Oakes was the winning pitcher in game two. She came in during the first inning after starter Destinee Levesque gave up a three-run homer. Oakes allowed five hits, but zero runs in 6.1 innings and her record now stands at 5-2 on the year.
"I thought Michelle and Mackenzie did a great job today," Wright said. "They were in some tough situations and got out of them which was really good."
The Bayer CropScience Classic comes to an end on Sunday. Fresno State plays No. 1 Cal at 3 p.m. and then closes the weekend against Butler at 5 p.m.
