Head coach Tim DeRuyter ushers the Bulldogs into the Mountain West and Fresno State's first-ever MW game lies on Sept. 29 when the 'Dogs host in-state rival San Diego State.
"It's great to open a new conference with such strong opponents. I feel our non-conference schedule really prepares us well for the Mountain West," DeRuyter said of the schedule. "Overall it's a challenging schedule. We get a chance to open up at home at Bulldog Stadium and let our fans for the first time experience new offensive and defensive schemes."
Fresno State's season-opener is at home on Sept. 1 against Weber State. The Bulldogs then face back-to-back Pac-12 opponents, at Oregon on Sept. 8 and host Colorado on Sept. 15. Fresno State wraps up non-conference action on the road at Tulsa on Sept. 22.
"That challenge of playing four quality teams in the non-conference should get us battle tested before opening up conference play at home," DeRuyter said. "Then you find out right away where you are at in conference play, with two out of three games on the road."
In all, Fresno State will play six home games at Bulldog Stadium and six on the road in 2012.
"The timing of today's announcement coincides with our annual ticket renewal period. We want to thank everybody that has already renewed for the 2012 football season," Senior Associate Athletics Director Paul Ladwig said. "The announcement of the schedule along with the excitement of our new head coach will help enhance the renewals and create a buzz for others to purchase their tickets. Our goal is to have the Central Valley discover Fresno State football in 2012."
After the league opener against San Diego State on Sept. 29, Fresno State's next two games are both on the road to kick off the month of October. The Bulldogs play at Colorado State, Oct. 6, before traveling to Boise State, Oct. 13. Fresno State's last game in Fort Collins was in 2003 while the game against Boise State marks the 12th consecutive season the Broncos and Bulldogs face off.
On Oct. 20, Fresno State hosts Wyoming and the `Dogs close out the month on Oct. 27 with a game at New Mexico. The Bulldogs and Cowboys last met in the 2009 New Mexico Bowl while Fresno State last played the Lobos in 1998.
Fresno State returns home on Nov. 3 to host Hawai'i and one week later travels to Reno to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. The Nov. 10 game at Nevada ends a long stretch for the Bulldogs where they play 11-straight weeks to begin the year.
After that, Fresno State has just one remaining game over the last three weekends. The season finale lies on Nov. 24 when Air Force comes to town.
Not reflected in the release of this base schedule is kickoff times or games selected for television. Those will be determined in the coming weeks and the final version of the schedule is targeted for release by April 1.
