Alcantara Earns Second WAC Honor

DENVER, Colo. - Fresno State men's tennis student-athlete Francis Alcantara was named the Verizon WAC Player of the Week for Feb. 27-March 4.
The sophomore earned his second honor of the season for his performance against No. 42 San Diego State on Thursday and at the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships held this weekend.
Against the Aztecs, Alcantara went 2-0 in singles and doubles and was a crucial part of the Bulldogs, 4-3, victory. He and partner Remi Boutillier earned the only Bulldog win in doubles beating Javier Pulgar and Hunter Nicholas in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4). In singles, No. 52 Alcantara defeated Thorsten Bertsch, 6-2, 6-4, helping the team complete its ninth-straight win of the season.
At the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships, with partner Jean-Charles Diame, Alcantara defeated Matthew Jones and Adam Levie 7-6(4), 6-3, and duo, Corey Smith and Jonny Wang of No. 1 USC, 6-2, 6-4. Alcantara and Diame fell in the quarterfinals to the runner-up duo of Kris Kwinta, UCLA assistant coach, and John Peers, a former Baylor player.
The Bulldogs face Wisconsin at home on Friday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
