HONOLULU - No. 14 Hawai'i scored nine runs in the fifth inning to erase a one-run deficit and hand the Fresno State softball team an 11-3 loss on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Bulldogs (31-18, 11-3 WAC) held a 3-0 lead going into the fourth and a 3-2 lead before Hawai'i (38-5, 12-3 WAC) exploded in the fifth and induced the mercy rule to end the game.
UH now takes a half-game lead on the Bulldogs in the conference standings. The teams return to the field Saturday for a doubleheader to decide the series.
Fresno State got its three runs off five hits while the Rainbow Wahine scored 11 runs on 11 hits, seven of which came in the fifth inning. UH had six singles, a double and three walks in the frame where it put the game away.
Courtney Moore was responsible for all three Bulldog runs on the night, as she blasted a three-run homer to left field in the third inning. It was her ninth home run of the season and her fifth in WAC play.
Senior pitcher Michelle Moses drew the loss on the night, just her second in WAC play. She is now 20-12 overall on the year and 9-2 in conference action.
Moses struck out nine batters in her 4.2 innings of work, including six through the first two innings. She surpassed the 600 strikeout plateau for her career, becoming the sixth pitcher in school history with 600 strikeouts.
UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts improved to 24-3 with the win. She had six strikeouts and four walks on the night.
