FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior quarterback Derek Carr was named Monday to the annual watch list for the Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Carr and Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith were the only two selections from the Mountain West on the watch list that includes 25 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2012 season.
Carr threw for 26 touchdowns and 3,544 yards as a sophomore in 2011, which was the third-most in program history. He was a second-team All-WAC selection last year and ranked 15th nationally in total passing yardage. Carr completed 62.6 percent of his passes and only threw nine interceptions on the season.
Carr has also been named to the preseason watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award, the Maxwell Award and to the CFPA Quarterback Trophy Award.
The winner will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
