FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team will tee off its 2012-13 fall season at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic next week in Fort Collins, Colo.
Last year, Fresno State finished 14th out of 19 teams in the annual Colorado State-hosted Ptarmigan. UC Davis captured the 2011 title, followed by Illinois and Colorado, who both were two strokes back of the Aggies to tie for second in the competitive field.
The Bulldogs have prepared themselves for this tournament and hope to reach their first process goal as the season begins.
"We know if we take care of the day to day building blocks, we will reach great things as a team," Head Coach Angie Cates-Moore said.
The team has set sights on a successful season in the Mountain West Conference.
"Our tournament schedule is the best we have ever put together," Cates-Moore said. "We will play on some outstanding golf courses that have hosted both LPGA and PGA major championships and with competition that will prepare us for post season."
As the `Dogs approach a new season and a new lineup, the number one spot has provided good, healthy competition for the team. The `Dogs lineup for this tournament features returning golfers Madchen Ly, who received conference Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference awards last year, second team all-conference award winner Christine Uhalde, Hillary Billingsley, and Shaylee Yano, and freshman Hannah Sodersten.
"Competition is a huge motivating factor for each of them and trying to earn the number one spot is going to keep the fire going," said Cates-Moore said. "Competition is fierce, but they also want to see each other excel. It's the perfect combination to genuinely motivate one another."
The `Dogs will face some stiff competition in the season-opening tournament, including San Jose State, who took first place in the WAC Championship last year, UNLV, Colorado, New Mexico, and Baylor. Fresno State hopes to show off the hard work they've put into preparing for this season and come out strong at the end of this two-day tournament.
