FRESNO, Calif. --- Four Bulldogs from the Fresno State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee participated in the Break the Barriers iCan Bike Program the week of July 15-19 that was held at Fresno City College.
Karl Mickelsen and Jordan Brown of the football team along with Sam Brechmann and Emily Duff of the women's soccer team had a rewarding experience as they volunteered their time to teach children how to ride a bike.
The iCan Bike Program was a week-long specialized bike camp to help teach children with a disability how to ride a bicycle. For one week, volunteers were paired with a rider for two hours a day to help teach the children how to ride a regular two-wheel bike independently.
"The iCan Bike program was incredible, all of the volunteers who gave up their time to help these children learn to ride a bike were awesome," said Brown. "The kids showed so much determination and heart to get up and ride, and didn't let their disabilities slow them down. It was a very enlightening experience."
The Fresno State student-athletes were a part of 100 volunteers that mentored a total of 40 children. The majority of the kids that participated in the program were able to ride their bikes by themselves by the end of the week.
"It was a great experience being a part of something so great, volunteering for this camp was a chance to make a difference in someone's life and help them achieve their goals," said Mickelsen. "I enjoyed helping and teaching these kids with special needs how to ride a bike because helping someone in their life can go a long way!"
Fresno State student-athletes participate in numerous volunteer opportunities around their local community and on campus throughout the year. In 2012-13 the 'Dogs tallied 3,701 hours of service to win their first Mountain West SAAC Community Service Award.
