NOBLESVILLE, Ind. After coming in as the No. 4 seed at the Hoosier Fall Invitational the Fresno State women's golf team wins both rounds of match play Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Purgatory Golf Club. The `Dogs first defeated No. 5 Illinois State (4-1) before beating No. 7 Ball State (4-1) in their second round of action. Ball State defeated No. 2 Eastern Michigan to play the `Dogs in the semi-final round.
"I am very proud of these ladies after our two match wins today," said head coach Emily Milberger. They played solidly through some very tough conditions and showed a lot of heart; particularly in the final stretch of the afternoon match."
The `Dog were dominate in the opening round of match play as they defeated Illinois State. Junior Hannah Sodersten was in control most of her 18 holes defeating Hayley Guyton from Illinois State. Senior Madchen Ly, sophomore Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir, and freshman Samantha Spencer all defeated their Illinois State opponents. Freshman Mimi Ho was defeated in a close round against Illinois State senior Lauren English.
"Both of our freshmen showed a great amount of maturity and grit this afternoon by fight back in the final stretches," said Milberger. "We have a lot of momentum heading into tomorrow's championship match and I know it's going to be an exciting finish."
The `Dogs sealed their 4-1 victory over Ball State with both of their freshman winning their head-to-head matchups. Sodersten, Bjorgvinsdottir, Spencer and Ho all defeated their opponents in round three. Ly was unable to defeat Ball State's sophomore transfer Allison Lindley in the final round of day two.
Fresno State will compete in the championship round tomorrow at 5:50a.m. PT against the winner of Match 5. Indiana vs. Illinois had 3 matches left that had to be suspended due to darkness, so they will be completed tomorrow morning to determine who the `Dogs will face for the title.
