STOCKTON, Calif, -- The Fresno State men's golf team finished the first round of the Pacific Invitational in seventh place with a 2-over par, 286 on Thursday at Stockton Country Club.
"Today we had a pretty solid round," said head men's golf coach Chad Spencer. "But, I definitely feel we can improve heading into the second round."
Sophomore Michael Pugh had a solid first round finishing in the top ten. His final score for round one was one-under par (70) putting him tied for ninth place. In the first round Pugh shot five birdies on holes 2, 3, 8, 17 and 18, and four bogies on 5, 6, 9 and 11.
Neil Bautista broke even to par with a total score of 71, finishing in 17th place. Justin Avery tied for 24th (72, +1), Harold Calubid tied for 32nd (73, +2), and Keenan Nelson tied for 47th (75, +4).
Cody Riecks, who is playing as an individual tied for 54th with a total score of 6-over par (77).
Washington State shot 275 and is 9-under to lead the team standings. Host Pacific and Grand Canyon each shot 281 and are tied for second. Washington State's Charlie Mroz is the low individual with a first round score of 66 (5-under).
"There could be rain tomorrow so a good attitude will help in shooting a good round," said coach Spencer.
The three-round tournament continues with the second round on Friday. The first groups were originally schedule to tee off at 8:30 a.m. However, due to the expected rain the time has been moved up to 8:00 am.
