FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team will be hosting four visiting schools in the annual Fresno State Classic, starting Monday, Oct. 6. The two-day 54-hole tournament will be held at San Joaquin Country Club.
"Over two events we have accumulated four top 25 finishes and we have had nine personal scoring records broken," said Head Coach Emily Milberger. "So it has been a pretty exciting season start so far."
"We finished pretty good the second day of the Minnesota Tournament," said senior golfer Madchen Ly. "So that should give us more confidence and momentum going into our home tournament."
The Dogs' have done well the past couple of weeks and are taking advantage of the momentum from their past two tournaments.
"The biggest advantage we have is knowing the course, say Machen Ly. "We play here three or four times a week."
The Tournament
The event will span two days and feature 54 holes of stroke play. A shotgun start format will be used for rounds one and two, both held on Monday. All players will be re-grouped before the final round on Tuesday, based on scores, and tee off every nine minutes from the first tee box. For the purposes of tournament honors and awards, ties will be split per NCAA Championship tie-breaking procedures.
Joined by golfers from four visiting schools along the west coast, the Fresno State women's golf team will compete at San Joaquin Country Club from Oct. 6-7.
For the first time in program history, the `Dogs will host their annual tournament at San Joaquin Country Club.
The Fresno State Classic, formerly called the `Fresno State Lexus Classic' for the past six years, enters its 11th year, an annual tradition that began at Fresno State in 2005. The women's tournament originated as the Kitahara Golf Classic that spanned throughout the first four years of the Bulldog-hosted tournament.
The Bulldogs are defending Champions, winning the Fresno State Lexus Classic (March 17-18, 2014) title by virtue of a tie- breaker after the `Dogs and Boise State were all square at 903 at the conclusion of three rounds. The fifth-person final round score that Bulldog freshman Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir held (79) was three strokes better than the Broncos fifth-person score to give Fresno State the edge and its first home-hosted team victory since 2007. The `Dogs are three-time champions of their own tournament (2005, 2007, 2013).
Ex-Bulldog Taylor Siebert is the sole `Dog to have won the home-hosted individual tournament title, 2008, a 36-hole even par score of 144 (73-71).
Fresno State holds the event's most wins, at three. UC Irvine and UC Davis are tied for second with two team wins each.
The Field
The 5-team field is comprised of host Fresno State, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, Santa Clara (A) and Santa Clara (B). Fresno State will field three individuals, while Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State and Fresno City college will field one, respectively.
The Course
A jewel located on the banks of the San Joaquin River known for its fair but tough test of the game of golf, San Joaquin Country Club (located on the west side of Fresno, Calif.), will serve as the host site of this year's Fresno State Classic.
The par-72 course will play at 6,217 yards from the Red Tees.
Under the direction of Golf Course Architect, Robert Baldock, construction of San Joaquin Country Clun began in July of 1960, and the first drive off the first tee of the resulting 7,300 yard Championship Course took place in May of 1961. Ground was broken for the Clubhouse in March 1962, which was opened to the membership in January 1963.
"Everyone has a lot of things to contribute," said Hannah Sodersten. "I think with each one of us we can add a lot to make it a team win."
"It's time to defend the title," said Coach Milberger. "We are really looking forward to coming back out and show casing our talents and walking away with another trophy."
The par-72 course will play at 6,217 yards from the Red tees.
