FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior right tackle Justin Northern was named Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 first-team, marking the second consecutive year he has received the honor.
Northern now becomes eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The mechanical engineering major out of Lakewood, Calif. has started each and every game for the Bulldogs over the past two seasons and this year has opened the holes for running back Marteze Waller who is one of the top tailbacks in the country. Running behind Northern and the Bulldog offensive line, Waller has rushed for 941 yards, seven touchdowns and 6.63 yards per carry. His average yards per rush this season ranks No. 9 in the country for all running backs with at least 100 carries on the season.
Last season Northern helped lead the Fresno State offense that was one of the most prolific in the nation, as the Bulldogs led the FBS in passing (394.8 ypg), ranked third in total offense (547.8 ypg) and was sixth in scoring (43.4 ppg). Fresno State allowed just 11 sacks in 13 games in 2013, a figure that tied for the sixth-fewest sacks allowed in the FBS.
Fresno State, behind Northern and his fellow offensive line counterparts, was able to set 19 school offensive records in 2013.
