FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State true freshman tight end Chad Olsen has been named a Freshman All-American, as announced by Sporting News Wednesday morning.
Olsen, a Chico, Calif. native, is the first Bulldog to be named a Freshman All-American since Davante Adams in 2012 and the ninth overall this century. He is the first Bulldog tight end to receive an All-American honor of any kind since Craig Jones (honorable mention) in 1988.
Olsen is the first true freshman at Fresno State - wide receiver or tight end - to catch four touchdown passes this century and those four TD catches also tied for the second-most by a tight end of any class in Fresno State single-season history.
The true freshman enters the bowl season totaling 12 receptions for 143 yards and four touchdowns after playing in all 13 games and starting four. Olsen set career highs with four receptions for 55 yards and two touchdowns at UNLV on Oct. 10 - one of which was a 29-yard TD catch, the longest touchdown catch by a tight end since Bear Pascoe on Oct. 14, 2006. He later matched his career-high of four receptions and set a new career-high for yards with 62 on Nov. 8 vs. San Jose State.
Olsen was the only Mountain West player to be named to the Sporting News' Freshman All-American team and one of three players not from the Power Five conferences to be recognized.
Earlier in December, Olsen was named an All-Mountain West honorable mention selection, becoming the 11th true freshman in MW history to receive all-conference honors and the first true freshman under head coach Tim DeRuyter to garner all-conference accolades.
