FRESNO, Calif. - The men's Bulldog tennis team began its 2014 season in Napa, Calif., for the three-day Napa Valley Invitational that started on Friday, Sept. 12 at the Silverado Resort.
In their second season at Fresno State, sophomores Eric Komati and Alexandros Georgios Vakouftsis are representing the `Dogs, as well as freshman Jokob Keppelmann and transfer sophomore from Drake University, Euan McIntosh.
"The guys came out a little tentative in doubles, assistant coach James McKie said. "But for some it was their first ever college match, so to be expected. I thought we stepped it up in singles and Euan and Eric got a couple of great wins against top players."
In singles, Fresno State split with Hawaii winning two out of the four matches played. McInosh defeated Pavel Liska 7-5, 6-2. Fellow sophomore, Komati beat Nils Schuhmann in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Vakouftsis fell to Chas Okamoto 6-3, 6-2 and Keppelmann lost 6-2, 6-1 in his first singles match as a Bulldog.
Keppelmann and Vakouftsis dropped their first doubles match against the Warriors, 8-5. Komati paired with McIntosh and fell 8-5 to Carter Lam and Nils Schuhmann.
"We need to come out strong tomorrow morning and keep using these opportunities in the fall to prepare us for the spring," McKie said.
The `Dogs are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m. The players will rotate between singles and doubles play each day in a team-rotation tournament style.
