FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team wraps up its first weekend of the 2014 season at the Napa Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Second season assistant coach James McKie is pleased how the `Dogs performed in what was the first tournament for two of the four players who made the trip to Napa, Calif.
"Thought it was a very solid first tournament of the year," McKie said. "We improved a lot in doubles from Friday to Sunday and some of the guys picked up some big singles wins this weekend."
In doubles play, Euan McIntosh and Eric Komati won two of the three matches played this weekend including wins over Oklahoma State and Pepperdine University. Also paired together for the three-day tournament was Alex Vakouftsis and Jakob Keppelmann who fell to Hawaii and Pacific and defeated Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon.
The `Dogs split in singles matches over the three-day stretch with six wins in the total of 12 games in which they competed. McIntosh, a transfer sophomore from Drake University, won all three of his singles matchups for the Bulldogs including Hawaii's Pavel Liska, Alex Solonin from Pepperdine and Vasco Valverde representing the University of San Francisco.
Responsible for the other half of the `Dogs wins was returning sophomore Eric Komati who defeated top junior, Rakshay Thakkar 6-3, 6-0, 7-5. Komati also came out on top of Hawaii and ended the tournament with a win against Oklahoma State.
"Euan and Eric defeated two former top 60 in the world juniors, McKie said. "Eric won three 3 set matches which really showed his toughness this weekend. We need to build on this weekend for All-Americans in two weeks as well as other upcoming tournaments"
Fresno State tennis will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Tournament beginning Saturday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, October 5 in Tulsa, Okla.
