FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team fell to Cal Poly 6-1 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday evening.
"We learned a few tough lessons again tonight about dealing with a top level striker," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "I feel the score line is deceiving, however, as we really played well in a lot of segments of the match and had two goals called back, hit the post twice and hit the bar once in the midst of our aggressive attacking efforts. Our opponents were sharp in the box and made us pay the price, but we knocked on the door many times and just didn't get the final reward."
With three unsuccessful shots in the first ten minutes by the Mustangs, freshman goal keeper Domenique Banta started off strong recording only her fourth start for the Bulldogs. Banta's save streak was broken with a Cal Poly goal in the 10th minute of the first half.
The Mustangs went on to score in the 16th and 37th minute leaving the Bulldogs trailing by three at the half.
The Bulldogs recorded five shots in the first half, six in the second half and six shots on goal for Fresno State. With 335 minutes recorded this season, Banta has a total of 17 saves in the box for Fresno State.
Cal Poly didn't waste much time in the second half when Elise Krieghoff found the back of the net in the 51st minute still leaving the `Dogs scoreless. The Mustangs went on to secure the lead with a goal in the 53rd minute followed by Cal Poly's final goal just three minutes later.
With nine minutes left to play, senior Jaycee Bingham netted the only goal for the Bulldogs. Bingham leads the team with five goals, 22 shots and 11 shots on goal in eight total games.
"We are close," Zwaschka added. "We won't stop working and fighting and did exactly that tonight, which especially showed in the second half. We believe in ourselves, we know we are capable of a lot more and we know we have to earn it. We will look to Sunday for another chance to get closer to our true identity."
Fresno State will return home on Sunday, Sept. 21 to take on Sacramento State (4-4) at 6 p.m. Following Sunday's game, the `Dogs are slated to host the first two conference games starting with New Mexico (1-3-0) on Friday, Sept. 26.
Mountain West play will continue Sunday, Sept. 28 with a matchup against the 2013 conference champions San Diego State. The Aztecs are currently leading in MW standings with a 4-1-1 record and overall percentage of .750.
