FRESNO, Calif. -- With the countdown to the 2014-15 men's basketball season ticking away, Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry introduced a fall speaker series as a way for the Bulldogs to learn essential life skills for use on and off the court.
"Heading into our fall preseason, we wanted to educate our players on many relevant topics currently in the news, as well as to bring in speakers with valuable information about their life experiences," Terry said. "These speakers are addressing important life skills and how good and bad decisions can change your life."
The first two speakers through the team's Life Skills series were Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer and the President of Angels of Grace of Fresno Lisa Casarez.
Dyer spoke to team about multiple law issues, including drug and alcohol abuse, drinking and driving, interactions between males and females, fighting, the history of the region and other related topics.
"Our players were very engaged with the Chief and we greatly appreciated him taking time out of his busy schedule to address the team," Terry noted. "He mentioned how our players' role is to represent the University, the basketball program and the City of Fresno with great pride. That is an expectation we have for everyone involved in our program."
Casarez told her story of domestic abuse and the story of many battered women. Throughout the session, she expanded on today's problematic occurrences of domestic violence in professional athletics.
"Lisa encouraged our players to be great boyfriends, husbands and fathers - and gave them powerful real world stories of abuse and the life changing implications," Terry said.
The speaker series will continue throughout the fall with sessions featuring information on finance, nutrition, health and wellness, etiquette and proper dress attire.
