FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State fell 2-1 against the New Mexico Lobos Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. The `Dogs now hold a 1-9 over record and stand 0-1 in conference play.
"I think that we had a good game plan to play against a good physical team," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We knew it was going to be a battle and obviously at the start of conference play all teams are going to be interested in getting out of the gate on a strong foot. We had a really strong start and got caught early in the second half which was disappointing but credit to New Mexico for sticking with it and causing some problems for us. We're going to just look ahead for Sunday."
The `Dogs were the first to score in the 28th minute with an assisted header from senior Jaycee Bingham that found the back of the net. Bingham leads the team with six of the nine goals scored this season for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Ariana Holmes recorded the assist to Bingham's lone goal with a powerful overhead throw placed in the box to allow the ball past Lobo goal keeper Cassie Ulrich.
Armed with only one senior, redshirt freshman Quincy Slora stepped up for the Lobos and scored the first goal two minutes into the second half to tie the game.
Following Slora's goal, sophomore Savannah Viola recorded her first goal of the season to give the Lobo's a 2-1 lead over the `Dogs in the 54th minute of the game.
Junior Alyssa Wilson started at goal keeper for the Bulldogs and recorded two saves for Fresno State, leaving her responsible for 31 out of 50 total saves in the 483 minutes played.
At the conclusion of tonight's match, the `Dogs have played in exactly half of the fall competition schedule with ten games still left in the 2014 season.
The `Dogs are slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff with San Diego State (6-2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Bulldog Stadium. The Aztecs are currently first in the 2014 Mountain West Standings after a 1-0 victory over San Jose State.
Looking ahead, Fresno State will travel to Nevada next week to face the University of Las Vegas on Friday, Oct. 3 followed by a matchup against Nevada on Sunday, Oct. 5.
