FRESNO, Calif. - After the first two rounds of play at the first annual Nick Watney Invitational at the Sunnyside Country Club, the Dogs' sit second trailing University of the Pacific in a 10-team field.
Pacific is leading the day with a total team score of 551, 25-under (281,270). Fresno State sits second with a total team score of 568, 8-under (281, 287=568) on the day. Falling into third right behind the Dogs' is UC Irvine with a total team score of 571, 5-under (282, 289).
"Today was a good day!" said head coach Chad Spencer. "We didn't get off to a great start but finished strong in the first round. Overall 8-under par for two rounds is pretty good."
Two Dogs' that stepped up and led the team today in scoring was Neil Bautista (70, 69=139) who is currently tied for 4th place, and Justin Avery who is currently tied for 8th (69, 71=140).
"Hopefully we can get a charge on tomorrow and get ourselves in the running there," said Coach Spencer. "Justin Avery and Neil Bautista played fantastic today and picked up some of our slack."
After todays play Keenan Nelson is currently tied for 11th (69, 74=143), Cody Riecks is tied for 31st (73, 74=147), and Michael Pugh is tied for 38 (75, 73=148).
The Fresno State individuals that are participating in the tournament are Russell Takeuchi who is tied for 23rd (73, 72=145), Harold Calubid who is tied for 26th(75, 71=146), and Troy Sweeney who is 60th (83, 79=162).
"If we want to play well tomorrow we have to dominate the par fives like we did this morning," said coach Spencer. "Four or five-under should put us in the running for first tomorrow."
The Dogs' play the final round of the first annual Nick Watney tournament Tuesday morning and tee off at 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. PT (off #1 and #10 tees).
