FRESNO, Calif. - The first annual Nick Watney Invitational comes to a close as the Dogs' finish second behind Pacific after the final round of the tournament.
Pacific took the tournament with an outstanding score of 26-under (281, 270, 287=838). UOP was tough competition for the tournament and became the first team to win the Nick Watney Invitational. After a slow start Tuesday morning, Fresno State finished strong in second place with a total team score of 6-under (281, 287, 290=858).
The two best performers of the tournament were Justin Avery who finished 8th with a total score of 4-under (69, 71, 72=212) and Neil Bautista who tied for 17th and shot even (69, 71, 77=216).
To conclude the tournament Keenan Nelson (69, 74, 75=218, +2) and Michael Pugh (75, 73, 70=218, +2) tied for 23rd. Cody Riecks tied for 29th with a total score of 4-over (73, 74, 73=220).
"We got off to a slow start again today but towards the end we really fought and showed our pride and came in second," said head Coach Chad Spencer. "Justin Avery, one of our freshmen, had a great finish. We're going to be fine this year, we're getting better."
The Fresno State individuals that participated in the tournament were Russell Takeuchi who tied for 29th (73, 72, 75=220 +4), Harold Calubid in a four-way tie for 19th (75, 7, 71=217 +1), and Troy Sweeney who finished 60th (83, 79, 81=243 +27).
We have some good veteran guys," said Coach Spencer. "We also have some good young guys, so I think it's a good mix, they can learn from each other and get better. We didn't play so good in Michigan but the past two tournaments have showed how we've improved over the past two years so I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
Up next, the `Dogs will compete at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Nov. 20-21, in Simi Valley Calif.
