FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. to kick off the 2014-15 season playing in the Wolverine Intercollegiate Classic, Sept. 6-7. The tournament is hosted by the University of Michigan and will be held at its U-M Golf Course.
"Weather could definitely be a factor in Michigan," said head men's golf coach Chad Spencer. "But again it is about being prepared for all conditions so you can perform at a high level."
The Bulldogs are catching the tail end of a large thunderstorm that is passing through Michigan. The young team is well prepared.
Spencer is very excited for the upcoming season and has big expectations for his young team.
"University of Michigan's tournament will be a great event with a great field," said Spencer. "I hope our guys can focus on what we need to do to be successful and play well on the course."
One of their keys to success is senior golfer Keenan Nelson, who is one of the leaders as well as one of the most consistent players on the team.
"Keenan is coming off his best year as a Bulldog and should continue to improve," Spencer said. "As a team we are very consistent. In qualifying, from first to sixth place was only separated by two shots. We have the ability to go low, but I know we can be a team that is always in the mix."
The five Bulldogs that make up the lineup for the first tournament in Michigan are Nelson, Harold Calubid, Michael Pugh, Justin Avery and Russell Takeuchi.
These five take on some of the most competitive collegiate teams at the Wolverine Intercollegiate Classic that features 11 teams and 11 individuals in the field, playing 54 holes in the two-day tournament. Scoring will be played as five players, count the low four totals. The U-M Golf Course will be set up for a par 71 and 6,704 yards.
