Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team fell 3-0 to UC Irvine Friday night at Anteater Stadium leaving the `Dogs with a 1-4 overall record and giving the Anteaters their first win of the 2014 season.
"We again had some very bright moments against a very physical opponent," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "However, we didn't put enough together tonight to outsmart their inevitable energy in their home opener. We got punished for a few slips by a very good team."
In the 13th minute of the first half, Jaycee Bingham recorded the first shot of the match with a save by UCI goal keeper Jenn Randazzo. Junior midfielder Dani Rodrigues had the second, and final, shot on goal for the `Dogs in which was blocked by the Anteaters leaving Fresno State scoreless.
Freshman goal keeper Domenique Banta had her first start for the Bulldogs in tonight's match-up with seven saves in the 90 minutes she recorded. Banta was assisted with two team saves out of a total of 20 shots by UC Irvine.
The Anteaters came out on top of the Bulldogs scoring twice in the first half and netting a final goal in the 75th minute of the second half, concluding with a final score of 3-0.
"We chalk another one up to lessons learned," Zwaschka said. "I have to give credit to this whole group for staying positive and fighting bravely. The score line only tells part of the story. This young squad is laser focused on preparing for conference play. We will be ready. I have zero doubts."
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs visit No. 16 Santa Clara on Sunday Sept. 7. Kickoff for the match-up against the Broncos is at 2:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
No. 16 Santa Clara fell to No. 25 Notre Dame in tonight's match at Buck Shaw Stadium, leaving the Broncos with a 2-2 recorded as they take on the Bulldogs on Sunday.
