Rana Sherif Ahmed Named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State junior Rana Sherif Ahmed was named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
In a tough field this weekend at the Cal Nike Winter Invitational, which included No. 7 California, No. 46 Saint Mary's and Cal Poly, Ahmed had a combined record of 4-2 in singles and doubles play.
The highlight of the weekend for the junior from Cairo, Egypt came as she defeated Saint Mary's (CA) Catherine Leduc, who was ranked No. 123 by the ITA, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 on the second day before also turning away Cal Poly's Hannah Stone in three sets, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1 on the final day. Ahmed's lone loss in singles competition was to the nation's No. 14-ranked player, California's Zsofi Susanyi, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
In doubles play, she teamed up with sister Mayar Sherif Ahmed. The sisters topped Saint Mary's (CA) and Cal Poly by matching 6-1 scores, while falling to California's No. 4-ranked duo of Denise Starr and Meagan Manasse, 6-3.
The conference honor is Ahmed's second of her career.
