Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State Head Coach
On playing redshirt freshman Kilton Anderson at quarterback . . .
"We were trying to find things that fit his skill set and wanted to add some more as far as designed runs go. We wanted to slow the ball down a bit and try to control the ball. The Utah State front is difficult to run against and I thought he competed well. There are a lot of things that we have to teach him off of this tape. It being his first time starting, it is very difficult."
On decision to start Anderson . . .
"Each week we are trying to find the guy that gives us the best chance to win the football game that Saturday. That is the bottom line. A week ago, we did not play very well, not just at the quarterback position. We felt we just needed a kickstart and felt Kilton's energy and athletic ability gave us a chance."
On if he is the starter going forward . . . "We will grade the tape and see. There are things he did not do well, just like everywhere, we will look at the tape and talk through with him and help him understand things."
On if struggles on offense find their way to the defense . . .
"I think you have to play defense with an attitude and energy. A negative play may affect a younger player, but we need to grow out of it. It is unacceptable, we need to grow up. In the game of football, there is going to be adversity and times where it is going to be tough."
Kilton Anderson, Redshirt Freshman Quarterback
On the game . . .
"It's very frustrating. We have to learn from it and get better. Like DeRuyter said, we have a bunch of young guys and we need to come together as a team right now. We need to come back tomorrow, work, and get better, and play our best against UNLV."
On the scheme . . .
"It's a great game plan. We've just gotta trust our coaches, trust each other, and come together as a unit. An offense is like a machine, and all parts have to be running together and it just didn't happen tonight. We'll get back together tomorrow and figure it out."
On when he found out he was starting . . .
"This morning. I'm very excited. Whenever you get your shot, you've just gotta take it and run with it and do your best. That's what I did tonight. I did my best. I just didn't get it done."
On if he saw himself starting at the beginning of the season . . .
"I did not. But you have to be ready for anything that's thrown at you. I was getting mental reps, I was on the sideline paying attention, and I came out ready to go."
On keeping the team together . . .
"We all keep each other together. It's a family, that's just the way things work. If one guy's down, the whole team surrounds him and gets him back up. We run off each other's energy. That's the way it works."
