FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team defeated No. 9 New Mexico State 12-8 on Friday at the Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Aggies move to 2-4.
"Today went well for us," head coach Eric Hubbard said. "I am proud of the flat team for sweeping New Mexico State, we saw some really good things and are excited for tomorrow's competition against Texas A&M."
Fresno State took home all four Most Outstanding Player awards on Friday as sophomore Kylina Chalack claimed both on the Hunt Seat side with exceptional scores of 87 on the flat and 85 over fences. Senior Sydney Elliott (Horsemanship) and junior Taylor Brown (Reining) earned MOP honors in the Western events against New Mexico State.
The Aggies gained an early 3-2 lead in Equitation Over Fences in the opening event, as Paige Pastorino (75) and Kylina Chalack (85) both grabbed a point for the Bulldogs. In the Western arena, Fresno State's Rachel Williams (72.5), Taylor Brown (74) and Elliott (74) tied the matchup with a 3-2 advantage in Horsemanship.
During the second half of competition, the `Dogs swept the Aggies 5-0 in Equitation on the Flat while moving to 10-5 with only one event left. Freshman Alexandra Dirickson (79), sophomores Sierra Swaffar (83) and Chalack (87) and juniors Genna Fogelberg (72) and Savannah Bernard (67) all defeated their opponents and picked up points for Fresno State.
Despite a 3-2 defeat in Reining, Fresno State garnered its third head-to-head victory this fall with an overall score of 12-8 versus New Mexico State. Since 2009, the `Dogs have faced the Aggies in four home-openers while claiming wins in all but one. The two programs competed earlier this month as Fresno State suffered a tough 9-7 loss on the road.
On Saturday, Texas A&M and New Mexico State will take the reins at 9 a.m., to conclude the second half of each event, while the Bulldogs prepare to take on No. 7 Texas A&M in all four competitions starting at approximately 12 p.m.
