Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State Head Coach
Opening statement…
"I thought we started game well, competed and got some stops. They're really skilled at quarterback and receivers create tough match-up problems but I thought we faced that pretty well. We gave up a ball over our head on a deep ball, but you can't turn the ball over and throw a pick six and set another score up on your side of the field which is tough. But still being down 24 at the half, you take away those two scores which you can't, but our guys mentally were it could be a 10-3 ball game and we're still competing."
On the offense…
"We really struggled to run the ball against their front. They do a good job against the run and we got too predictable in the throw game and you have to make better decisions when you throw the ball."
On the turnovers…
"We knew coming into this game that we needed to win the turnover battle. A week ago we did a real good job, made good decisions and not turn the ball over and this week was the opposite."
On BYU's defense…
"We knew it was going to be a step up in competition. This is a much better football team playing here in Provo. They have big, physical players on defense. They did what we thought they were going to do. They pressured [Zack Greenlee]. They mixed things up, confuse him a couple times with disguise. Every week is going to be a challenge so we didn't think it was going to be a walk in the park by any means for us."
On senior day next week…
"We have some seniors who have a tremendous amount of pride. This is their last time at Bulldog Stadium. They'll be out there with their friends and family. They want to remember that day, and for me, I want to give them the best experience possible for their senior day. We're going to have a great week of preparation and go out there and plan to win a football game."
On Marteze Waller closing in on 3,000 rushing yards…
"He's been a tremendous Bulldog and will be in really rare company going over 3,000 yards. It's a heckuva testament to him, the offensive line. He's such a great worker and a great kid. It'll be nice to see a guy like that have that."
Jamal Ellis, Junior Defensive Back
On covering taller receivers…
"You just have to always be ready to compete. Any other receiver, I'm in perfect position, but with a receiver that tall, the ability to fight for that jump ball, that's the biggest challenge when going against a big, physical receiver."
On the score…
"When I see that final score, I feel like it doesn't reflect how hard we played on defense."
On what he learned from the game…
"Even if you're prepared, you think you're prepared, bump it up a notch and get more prepared because throughout practice and film I felt that we were prepared. We competed, but we just need to bump it up a notch."
Ejiro Ederaine, Senior Outside Linebacker
On the game…
"We were in the game in the first quarter, trading back-to-back stops. I feel that somewhere in the second quarter before halftime they made some plays and we didn't."
