COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Sophie Watts was named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Watts posted a 3-0 record last week while playing at the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles positions as the Bulldogs defeated No. 66 Kansas State 5-2 and San Francisco 7-0. The junior scored the dual match-clinching point in the upset of Kansas State.
Ranked No. 47 heading into the weekend, the native of Hitchin, England topped Kansas State's Palma Juhasz, 7-5, 6-3 and bested No. 49 Andrea Ka of San Francisco, 6-3, 6-2. Watt's win over Ka was her first over a ranked opponent this season and it helped move her up to No. 43 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
She also teamed with twin sister Anneka Watts in doubles and the sisters rolled to a 6-2 victory over San Francisco's Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Ines Teixeira.
