LIHUE, Kaua'i - The second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate wrapped up with the Fresno State men's golf team in 13th place on Thursday. Freshman Harold Calubid remains on top of the Bulldog contingent, owning a team-best three-over par (72-75--147) after 36 holes.
"We are very close to putting together some great rounds," said head coach Chad Spencer. "The wind was blowing 20-30 mph today, so another challenging day for us on the golf course."
Fresno State began the day in a tie for 12th after shooting a 302 on Wednesday, but dropped a position after recording one more stroke on day two - 303 (+15).
Senior Neil Bautista had the most successful day navigating through the winds at Wailua Golf Course, improving his opening day round by four strokes. He fired a two-over 74 on Thursday.
Calubid, the Bulldogs' scorecard leader, owns the seventh-most pars in the 93-man field with 25 through 36 holes.
The John Burns Intercollegiate concludes on Friday. It will be a shotgun start for the third day in a row, beginning at 10:30 a.m. (PT).
"With a solid round tomorrow, we have the capability to move up the leaderboard quickly," Spencer added.
Fresno State sits just six strokes back from seventh-place Arizona, and eight strokes back from sixth-place UTEP. The tournament leader, California, will seek its fifth straight win at the John Burns Intercollegiate - dating back to a 2011 win at Turtle Bay Resort.
