ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Fourteen Fresno State women's track and field athletes wrapped up their stay at the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Freshman Tiffany Gilmore posted a collegiate-best distance in the weight throw. She recorded a throw of 58 feet, 4 inches (17.78 meters) to finish sixth. Her performance on Saturday moved her into seventh in the Mountain West during the indoor season and she is the top freshman in the conference.
On Friday in the long jump, senior Je'Nia Sears jumped a season long 20 feet, 4.25 inches (6.20m) to finish third. The Edison High product improved on her already Mountain West-leading position and moved into 14th in the country in the long jump.
Also on Friday, the Bulldogs saw three runners finish in the top 12 of the 400 meter dash. Dezirae Johnson placed third with a time of 55.93 seconds. She was joined in the top 12 by sister Kyra Johnson (10th, 56.88) and Njeri Omawahleh (12th, 57.07). Dezirae Johnson's time ranks her third in the Mountain West and just .28 seconds out of the top spot.
That trio of athletes was joined by Kimberley Efonye in the 4x400 relay and the group ran a season-best 3:43.08. They finished fifth in the event.
Fresno State will be back in action next weekend when they return to Seattle for the Husky Classic. In three weeks, the Bulldogs will return to Albuquerque for the third time in a five week stretch for the 2015 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships.
