FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State's Rana Sherif Ahmed has been named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon. The honor is the junior's second of the season after claiming it after the opening week of play.
The Bulldogs have now won the weekly honor in five of the nine weeks that the conference has given it out.
Sherif Ahmed went 4-0 on the week, both 2-0 in doubles and singles. In the No. 3 singles position, she defeated both of her opponents in straight sets. She turned back San José State's Marie Klocker 6-0, 6-1, and Idaho's Sophie Vickers 6-3, 7-6 (2) to improve to 14-3 on the year.
She also teamed with her younger sister Maiar at No. 1 doubles, where they defeated the Spartans' Klocker and Gaelle Ray 6-2 and Idaho's Emmie Marx and Galina Bykova 6-2. The duo improved to 16-1 overall in 2015.
The strong showing from Rana and the Fresno State women's tennis team helped them move up No. 33 in the ITA rankings on Tuesday, the team's highest ranking since Feb. 4, 2010 when the team was 29th in the country.
