ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In its second conference match of the season, the Fresno State men's tennis team hit the road for one of the toughest opponents in the Mountain West in No. 44 New Mexico and dropped a 4-2 result at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.
After splitting the first two matches of the doubles competition, the Bulldogs (9-7, 0-2 MW) gave the Lobos (13-8, 1-0 MW) a run on Court Three. Tied at 6-6, Euan McIntosh and Youssef Hassan forced a lengthy tiebreaker against Samir Iftikhar and Mitchell McDaniels, but the `Dogs pair fell 13-11.
UNM took a 2-0 lead as James Hignett defeated Jakob Keppelmann 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Eric Komati cut the Lobos lead back to one with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Rodolfo Jauregui. Hayden Sabatka pushed their lead back to two with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Adam Glynn on Court Two. Facing the dual match clinching-point, McIntosh kept Fresno State alive with a 7-5, 7-6(4) victory at No. 4.
Sai Kartik Nakireddi was unable to hold off No. 61 Samir Iftikhar at No. 1 though, as the Bulldog senior fell in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5 as the Lobos grabbed the clinching point.
Fresno State will return home as the team hosts Air Force and Sonoma State on Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The `Dogs will face the Falcons at 9 a.m., PT, and the Seawolves at 1 p.m.
