FRESNO, Calif.- Bulldog softball's home opening conference game against San Jose State resulted in a 1-0 loss on Friday night at Margie Wright Stadium. The Spartans edged the `Dogs four-game winning streak with two matchups remaining in the weekend conference series.
"If you look at San Jose State's record it's pretty even to us," head coach Trisha Ford said. "I think they do a good job and we didn't get a big hit when we had runners in scoring position, in order to win games you have to have that timely hitting. It's important for us to take every game one pitch at a time and the first inning hurt us, they were able to get a run and Jill [Compton] held them off for the rest of the game. We have to come out tomorrow guns firing."
San Jose State scored the lone run of the game in the first inning after a leadoff double was advanced to third on a sacrifice fly and drove in on two-out base hit up the middle.
Fresno State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning after a base hit and drawing two walks but the `Dogs were left trailing the Spartans 1-0 after the first inning of play.
Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, Jill Compton (13-8) drew the start in the circle for Fresno State and went the distance of seven innings with six Spartan strikeouts, giving up five hits to San Jose State on Friday night.
After escaping a bases loaded situation in the top of the fourth inning, San Jose State regained momentum defensively holding the `Dogs to a total of three hits on the night. Sophomore second baseman Malia Rivers recorded the first hit for Fresno State in the first inning and led the team going 2-for-3 with a pair of infield singles.
"The good thing is, that's the first game of a three game series." Ford added. "I think we'll come out and bring a lot of energy tomorrow and it will be a different result."
Previous Action
Fresno State grasped the Mountain West series over Colorado State last weekend with a pair of five-inning run-rule victories, heading into the second weekend of conference action undefeated and on a four-game winning streak.
Looking Ahead
The `Dogs will be back in action against the Spartans for the second game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Following Saturday's action, Fresno State will cap the weekend at Margie Wright Diamond with the final game starting at noon.
