The Fresno State baseball team will aim to carry the positive momentum built at home this past weekend to the road Tuesday at Cal Poly for the first of five road games ahead of the 'Dogs. First pitch in San Luis Obispo is scheduled for 6 p.m. It will be the Bulldogs first trip to Baggett Stadium since April 17, 2012, a game Fresno State won 5-3.
The Bulldogs snapped a season-long six-game losing streak on Saturday with a 14-10 win against Mountain West foe Nevada, and turned around and won Sunday's game 3-1 to take the series win. It was the first series loss suffered by Nevada in 2015. The Wolf Pack defeated Fresno State 5-4 on Friday to open the series. After the weekend, Fresno State improved its home record to 16-5, all five home losses are by one run.
Cal Poly was the first team to hand Fresno State a loss in 2015, and the first team to start that streak of one-run losses on Feb. 17, 2015 at Beiden Field. The Mustangs built a 7-0 lead after the first seven and half innings, but Fresno State fought back, scoring six unanswered runs until Cal Poly stranded the games' tying run at second base and go-ahead run at first base when Danny Zandona struck out Manny Argomaniz to end the game.
Southpaw Anthony Arias (1-1, 5.55 ERA) is projected to make the start for Fresno State on Tuesday, while Cal Poly's right-handed Jarred Zill (1-1, 1.42 ERA) is expected to be on the bump for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly is currently riding a four-game winning streak, following a Big West sweep against Hawai'i and a midweek win last week over Pepperdine - all home contests. Tuesday's game will conclude a five-game homestand for the Mustangs. They will travel to UC Santa Barbara for a weekend set after the Bulldogs come to town.
Senior Taylor Tempel sports the 'Dogs top batting average leading up to Tuesday night's game, owning a .351 average. Tempel produced two hits in each game against Nevada batting from the leadoff spot in all three games. Taylor Ward registered his team-best seventh home run of the season on Saturday, breaking a drought of 12 games without a home run. Ward had five homers through the first 11 games earlier in the year.
Fresno State was ranked No. 53 in the Monday, April 13 RPI rankings, moving up 12 spots from the season's initial release last week. The Bulldogs are the top-ranked Mountain West team in the RPI.
