SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team dropped its Tuesday night matchup 10-6 to Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium. The 'Dogs led 6-2 after six and half innings until the Mustangs rallied for eight runs over the final three frames.
Fresno State (18-19, 9-6 MW) scored five times on three hits and one error in the third inning to jump in front 5-1 after Cal Poly put one across in the first.
During Fresno State's big inning, the first five Bulldog batters to go to the plate all reached base safely, leading to the exit of the Mustangs starting pitcher, Jarred Zill. Taylor Tempel was the catalyst, hitting a two-RBI double down the left field line to start the scoring after Cal Poly walked Brody Russell and allowed Korby Batesole on due to an error to lead off the third. Taylor Ward followed Tempel's at-bat with an RBI single to bring him home. Kenny Corey walked next, and then Ward scored on behalf of back-to-back passed balls, leaving Corey at third base. Kevin Viers hit an RBI groundout to score Corey, the fifth run of the third for the 'Dogs.
Cal Poly (15-18, 4-2 Big West) plated a second run in the fourth before the Bulldogs got the run back in the top half of the sixth. Corey hit a one-out single with the bases loaded to push the 'Dogs lead back to four, 6-2. The rally was cut short on the next at-bat when Manny Argomaniz hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Mustangs countered Fresno State's five-run inning with one of their own in the home half of the sixth - aided by three doubles and two walks. The 'Dogs issued two lead off walks, which both turned into runs on a two-RBI double by Mark Mathias. One more came across on the second double of the inning to bring the 'Dogs lead down to one, 6-5. Brett Barbier hit a two-out two-RBI double that put Cal Poly in front 7-6.
Barbier went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and recorded four RBIs.
Fresno State allowed three more runs in the bottom of the eighth that pushed the lead in favor of Cal Poly 10-6.
Cal Poly tagged 15 hits and five extra base hits against eight different Fresno State pitchers. Rickey Ramirez (0-2) was charged with the loss. The Mustangs allowed nine hits and one extra base hit. Slater Lee (1-0) picked up the win.
Tempel went for two base hits for the fourth consecutive game. He leads the team with a .358 batting average. Argomaniz also registered two hits on the night.
Fresno State will be back in action at Air Force on Friday to start a three-game Mountain West series .
