The Fresno State baseball team returns home on Tuesday to host No. 23 California for its first game back at Beiden Field since defeating the very same Golden Bear team on March 25. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
After defeating then-ranked No. 21 Cal 7-2 last time out at Beiden Field, Fresno State set off for its longest road trip of the season, seven games. The Bulldogs went 1-6 in those games against New Mexico and No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, and their road record fell to 2-13. Two of the Gauchos four wins were by one run, upping the Bulldogs' number of one-run decisions to 12 games this season - Fresno State is 3-9 in those games.
At Beiden Field, Fresno State is 14-4 and is playing a different brand of baseball vs. its road games. In 18 home games the 'Dogs own a .298 team batting average and 2.48 team earned run average. On the road, Fresno State owns a .250 team batting average and a 6.39 team ERA in 15 games.
With the Bulldogs' March 25 victory over Cal, they extended their win streak to three games over the Bears. Fresno State won both matchups at Beiden Field in 2014 - March 18 (6-0) and April 22 (7-4).
Sophomore Austin Guibor found the most success on the Bulldogs' seven-game road swing, boasting a team-best .375 batting average (9-for-24), coincidentally, he leads Fresno State with a .347 batting average for the season.
The Bears enter its midweek game against the Bulldogs ranked in two national polls - No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball, and No. 23 in Baseball America. California dropped out of the D1Baseball.com poll and continued to receive votes for another week in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll. The Bears went 1-2 last week at home in a conference series against Washington State.
The Bulldogs will face California for a third time in 2015 on April 28 (Tuesday) in Berkeley. It will be the 'Dogs first time to Cal since playing a four-game series at Evans Diamond in 2013.
