FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State dropped a 10-2 decision to San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Spartans used an early surge and a big seventh inning to pull away, behind a 12-hit performance and eight walks drawn at the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
San Jose State struck first in the opening frame, capitalizing on three walks and a two-out, two-run single to take a 2-0 lead. Fresno State starter Erik Rico exited after the first, and the Bulldogs settled in behind Brandon Thomas, who provided four innings of relief and kept the deficit at two through four innings.
The Spartans extended their lead in the fifth when Jake McCoy launched a two-run home run to left, pushing the advantage to 4-0. Fresno State answered in the bottom half, manufacturing its only runs of the game. Ethan Payne singled and later scored on a wild pitch before Brady Hewitt drove in Mikey Pickett with a groundout to cut the deficit to 4-2.
San Jose State broke the game open in the seventh, plating three runs on three hits and two walks to stretch the lead to 7-2. The Spartans added a solo home run in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth to reach double digits.
Fresno State was limited to six hits on the day, led by Cam Schneider's three-hit performance. Payne added a pair of hits, while Pickett recorded a double. The Bulldogs stranded seven runners and were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities early in the game.
On the mound, Thomas struck out four over four innings of relief, while Douglas Crystal and Weston Thornbury combined for 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
San Jose State was paced by McCoy, who finished with three RBIs, and Alex Fernandes, who reached base five times, scored four runs and added a home run.
