FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State's track and field teams qualified eight athletes to compete in nine events at next week's 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries. The meet will be hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin on May 28-30.
The Bulldogs are coming off last weekend's Mountain West Championships in San Diego where they had one individual event win and a repeat relay team championship.
Kyra Johnson, Njeri Omawahleh, Nailah Harris-Murillo and Dezirae Johnson teamed up to run a school-record time of 3:37.39 and win the women's 4x400 relay for a second straight year. They head to the West Regionals with the 12th best time in the region.
In the women's 400-meter hurdle, junior Kyra Johnson will go in as the highest ranked Bulldog women. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native ran a 58.22 second race to win the Mountain West Championship last Saturday. Johnson is ranked 10th in the event.
Omawahleh, Dezirae Johnson and Annemarie Schwanz will also all compete as individuals on the women's side. Omawahleh will run in the 200, an event in which she set the school record last weekend at the MW Championships with a time of 23.45. Johnson qualified in the 800 and Schwanz qualified in both the 1500 and 5000. Schwanz is the school-record holder in both of those events.
On the men's side, three Bulldogs will continue their season's next weekend.
Keane Bland qualified for the 110-meter hurdles with his season-best time of 14.32 that he recorded at last week's conference championships. Senior Devin Harrison advanced in the long jump thanks to his season-best mark of 7.42 meters. Fellow senior Brice Sandri will also be in action thanks to his season-best throw of 54.85 meters early in the season.
Regional qualifiers will look to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 10-13 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
