Kyra Johnson Advances to Quarterfinals

AUSTIN, Texas - Kyra Johnson highlighted the first day of competition on Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminary round in Austin, Texas for the Fresno State track and field team. The junior advanced to the quarterfinal round in the 400-meter hurdles, set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Johnson qualified for Friday's quarterfinal round by recording a 59.41-second time in the first heat. She finished inside the top 3 for the automatic qualification. Johnson will be one of 24 athletes vying for the 12 qualifying bids available for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, June 10-13.
Four other Bulldogs were in action on Thursday, all who fell short of their respective qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships.
Annemarie Schwanz ran a 4:33.28 in Thursday's 1500-meter race. She finished 37th out of 47 competitors. However, the junior will be back in action on Saturday for the 5000-meter race. A race Schwanz qualified for with a time of 16:23.63, the No. 27 mark in the West Region.
Dezirae Johnson crossed the finish line with a 2:12.34 time in the 800-meter run, almost three seconds off her 2:09.79 Mountain West Championships mark. She will be back on the track on Saturday as a member of the women's 4x400-meter relay team.
Two members from the men's track and field team were also in action, both on the field side.
Devin Harrison posted a 24 foot, 1/4 inch (7.32-meter) mark in the long jump, while Brice Sandri tossed a 169 foot, six inch (51.66m) throw in discus.
On the slate for Friday will be Keane Bland (110m Hurdles) at 3:30 p.m., Njeri Omawahleh (200m dash) at 6 p.m., along with Thursday's 400m Hurdles quarterfinal qualifier K. Johnson at 5:30 p.m.
