FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team played competitively during its scrimmage scoring six total goals in a 4-2 final. This was the team's last opportunity for game-like action before they begin its season this weekend on the road against Duke and No. 7 North Carolina.
"We've been doing at least two sessions a day for two weeks straight," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We're pleased with the effort because everybody is focused on the things we've been working on."
In two 35-minute halves, only one goal was scored in the first half, by senior forward Fanny Johansson with the assist by junior midfielder Alyssa Holsworth. Second half goals were scored by sophomore Alissa Pham, senior Alyssa Cruz, senior Sam Brechmann, sophomore Julia Campos, and Holsworth.
Zwaschka feels that this roster has the most depth that he's ever had in his seven years at Fresno State, which leads to competitive practices and scrimmages. Johansson believes that this will make for a special season.
"I think we challenged each other each and every minute of the game," Johansson said. "We still have a lot to work on, but we're feeling good going into this weekend. I think we have a good opportunity to play some great soccer against two great teams and we're looking forward to it."
Zwaschka added, "We're progressing, and that's exciting. We know we haven't solved everything and we still have some decisions to make regarding personnel, but we feel pretty excited about going into this opening weekend."
