FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team took the field Sunday for their first game-like action of the season in their first of two red/white scrimmages this preseason. Head coach Brian Zwaschka hopes these challenges push the players to compete at their best.
"I'm really happy with their overall effort," Zwaschka said. "One of the challenges that was put forth before the game was to make sure that they were really pressing each other and challenging each other."
The 'Dogs have less than one week to prepare for preseason opponent Stanford, who has received a No. 3 national preseason ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Zwaschka feels this is the best way to get the best out of his players to finalize some roster spots.
"We feel like we have a really good core that has returned from last year," Zwaschka said. "But we also feel like we have some depth, so there's definitely some challenging going on for spots and we don't expect anything but intensity out of those challenges this week."
The Bulldogs will head to Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday to face the Cardinal before playing another red/white scrimmage on Aug. 17 to close out their preseason. The 'Dogs open the season in North Carolina against Duke on Aug. 21.
