The Field
The 13-team field is comprised of host Fresno State, BYU, California, Cal Poly, Columbia, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.
A few of California's elite programs will provide stiff competition as Cal, Pacific, Saint Mary's and San Diego, all top-100 teams ranked by Golfstat, will visit Fresno for the Nick Watney Invitational.
Pepperdine will also be represented by two players who will compete individually.
The Tournament
The event will span two days and feature 54 holes of stroke play. A shotgun start format will be used for rounds one and two, both held on Monday. All players will be re-grouped before the final round on Tuesday, based on scores, and tee off every 10 minutes from holes No. 1 and No. 10. For the purposes of tournament honors and awards, ties will be split per NCAA Championship tie-breaking procedures.
Pacific won the first annual Nick Watney Invitational on Sept. 29-30, 2014, outmatching the field with a 26-under 838. Its second round 18-under 270 set the stage for the Tigers commanding win at Sunnyside Country Club; Pacific's Byron Meth was the tournament's medalist, carding a 10-under 206 (70-65-71).
The Fresno State Classic, formerly called the `Fresno State Lexus Classic', was renamed `The Nick Watney Invitational' prior to the September 2014 edition after former Fresno State standout and PGA golfer Nick Watney. Watney played at Fresno State from 2000-2003, and was a three-time All-American. Watney was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2000 and the WAC Player of the Year three consecutive seasons, 2001-03.
Fresno State has captured its home-hosted tournament crown six times (`73, '84, '90, '94, '01, '02), with its last wins coming when Nick Watney led the team both seasons. Watney was the individual champion of the Classic both in 2001 and 2002. At the 2001 event, Watney fired a Fresno State Classic record 63 during the second round, aiding the `Dogs to a 40-shot win over the second place finisher Stanford.
BYU, 2015 participant, owns the most tournament wins as a visiting contender at a Fresno State hosted men's golf tournament - sporting 12 in its all-time history.
The Course
Following its inaugural tournament at Sunnyside Country Club, the second annual Nick Watney Invitational moves to Fort Washington Country Club (located on the north side of Fresno, Calif.).
The course will play at par 71, 6,741 yards for the Nick Watney Invitational.
Fort Washington Golf and Country Club began operations in 1923 as a 9-hole course with dirt fairways and sand greens. Its original design was the work of Mr. William Watson. The name Fort Washington was inspired by the area's military fort of the early pioneers and settlers.
Director of Golf, Mr. Alan Ehnes has been affiliated with the club since 1984 and has been a golf professional since 1994. Ali Peyvandi, was recently appointed General Manager after serving for many years as Assistant Manager.
